—Naridus Thriven Living Series:
A self-guided path to define individual identity

Personal Narrative Workbook CoverA Personal Narrative is a thoughtful and realistic way to construct and communicate your identity in service of becoming kind of person you that you have the potential and desire to be. The Personal Narrative Process offers a powerful way to examine your life and reflect on the deeper dimensions of your experience. Among the benefits you can gain from the Personal Narrative Process:

  • improve self-confidence and enhance motivation.
  • clarify values, focus goals, and form an inspired vision of the future.
  • establish a concrete, realistic sense of your identity and the critical roles you play in your story.
  • become response-able, meaning you apply your story and your understanding of yourself to calmly respond to challenges and concerns rather than frantically reacting to situations from a place of fear and uncertainty.

The workbook developed for the Personal Narrative Process employs user-friendly, color-coded exercises and concrete examples.  This carefully designed and tested workbook that accompanies the coaching process leads you through the five steps of articulating your Individual Identity and crafting your story. While the Personal Narrative Process requires an investment of time and careful attention to how you will define yourself, it is also a fun and thought provoking experience that can dramatically and positively affect every aspect of your life.

The Personal Narrative Process workbook is self-guided and can be completed without facilitation. However, our structured coaching and facilitation brings a depth of experience and expertise to the process that enhances both the participant’s experience and the results.

What Is In Store For You

Personal Narrative Process

Narrating the events, facts, and experiences of your life by shaping them into a compelling story is a five-step process.

  1. Collect the raw story-material,
  2. Catch sight of yourself in the material,
  3. Craft a plot that connects the material,
  4. Check your plot against reality,
  5. Communicate your story.
1 The first step in the Personal Narrative Process is collecting the raw material for your narrative. You do this by looking at your current practices—those specific tasks and concrete activities that make-up your living—and recording a representative sampling. For example: “as software engineer, I write code” or “I ride bicycles in the park with my two children,” or “I answer phones as a volunteer at the United Way.” You then describe each of your practices in detail, and discuss them in the context of your past and the horizon of your future.2 In step two you catch sight of yourself in these practices by using a three-part conception of Individual Identity: Skills (things you know how to do), Concerns (things that are important to you), and Character (how you do things). You combine the descriptions from these three components to create a Self-Portrait of your Individual Identity. This is a picture of who you are as you appear in your collection of practices.3 You begin step three by using your Self-Portrait first to recognize and then to plot out who it is you want to become. A plot is the plan of a story’s action. The action of your story, the drama of your Personal Narrative, is your “becoming” who you choose to be in the future. The plot of your story lays out that action as it plays out in your past, present, and into your future. You craft a plot that connects the events and experiences of your life in terms of your becoming who you choose to be. The way you do this is by crafting a plot-line of your “becoming” for each chapter of your story. Finally, you combine the plot-lines for all your chapters to form the plot of your story.4 Step four gives you the chance to reality-checkyour plot and ensure that you’re not just making-up the whole thing. By making sure that your plot can accommodate your original practices you can be confident that the story you are collecting and crafting is realistic and genuine.

5 In the fifth and final step you use your plot to select, shape, and craft your raw material into a coherent and compelling story. You use your plot to tell your story via a Personal Narrative that captures who you are, makes sense of who you have been, and guides you in becoming who you would like to be. The Personal Narrative process culminates in your being able to skillfully communicate your story in different contexts and situations.
